Reverent Resolution

Abigail was tired and weary, her horses were tired and weary too, but as a team they were dedicated to moving forward through the rough hills and bumpy trail of this vast wasteland; trudging the wagon westward. Abigail had been through a lot in this life. Strong willed, yet humble, never to complain or despair about what life brings in the way of trials and rewards. Going across this barren land in search of the proper place has brought on trials of many kinds with few rewards. Her strong resolve toward the daily push set the best example of what her Creator had intended for all of us to have. Knowledge that life is a toil to be relished not so much seeking the comforts of relaxed idleness has to be taught to most people, but few like Abigail understood intuitively that the purpose of life is to toil. When one gets it as she has, one becomes synergistic with the grand plan of the universe.
Calvin was moving slowly over the trail with his team of horses pulling the rickety wagon. The horses were reluctant to keep going as they had lost a member of the team to the frivolous whim of their master when he had chanced upon the lustful episode with the indigenous maiden. A partial team brought to task of what's already arduous for the full team to accomplish. His wagon was lose at the seams and listed to one side or the other depending on which way the trail sloped. Whenever he stopped for the day, rather than maintain his craft, he laid on his bedding longer than necessary, forgoing chores to ensure a better future.
It was just past midday when Abigail looked back to see how far Calvin was behind her. Their original plan was for them to travel together across the testing lands of hope until they reached the boundary of ******. They were to plow the fertile soils, construct shelter from communal resources, and will a partnership to the day of reckoning. They had gazed into each others eyes with love and adoration and made a pact. But now, traveling across these testing lands, their eyes no longer gazed at each other's. Their eyes didn't even look in the same direction when they looked outward. Calvin wasn't living up to his end of the bargain. Abigail was going further than half way in the bargain, thinking that in time the half way point would average out. But the more Abigail did for the pact, the more Calvin took advantage of it.
He was way back behind her as she looked back. She couldn't even see him. It was a disappointment to her now. Every time she had to turn around and go back to help him along it got harder and harder. Her she was out in a place of tests and tribulations, very much like the team of horses that had been severed. She was doing all the work, for the team. It wasn't a team though and the realization was becoming clear.
As Abigail looked for a decent place to turn the team around, the horses sensed what was going on. They obeyed the reins but not without pulling back ears and raising eyebrows. But in the middle of the turn Abigail decided to let go of the reins to see which way her team wanted to go. They had a choice to complete the turnaround or swing back to the right heading toward the promised land of fertility. The horses became surprised. Their ears turned this way and that, looking for some direction. Their eyes looked about as if they were missing some direction. They had never been given free rein before, so they hesitated as to what to do next. Their hoofs danced as they could not be still, even with no directions. In a short while though, they turned right and began heading in the direction they were used to going in. They seemed to understand what was going on, so with trepidation and caution they straightened out the team and the wagon and headed forward, first slowly and then picking up the pace.
Abigail felt the resolve. She was both worried but relieved. She knew that down this dusty, bumpy, difficult trail there would be warmth and light. There would be fulfillment. Let the horses go for they have been guided long enough to guide on their own.
